Shut the water off first: the basement checklist
Every minute of flow is more drywall, more subfloor and more of your deductible. Do these in order, then call. None of it needs a tool.
- 1
Find the main shut-off before you find the leak
In most Macomb County homes it is in the basement on the street-facing wall, where the water line comes through the foundation, next to the meter. A lever handle turns a quarter turn until it sits across the pipe. A round wheel handle turns clockwise until it stops.
- 2
Kill the water heater if the leak is hot
Gas: turn the control knob to OFF or PILOT. Electric: switch off its breaker. A heater that keeps firing on an empty tank is a second emergency.
- 3
Open a low tap to drain the pressure
With the main closed, open a basement sink or the lowest faucet in the house. That drops line pressure so the leak slows to a dribble instead of a spray while you wait.
- 4
Cut the power to anything standing in water
Never step into water that could be touching an outlet, an extension cord, a sump pump or a furnace. Switch the circuit off at the panel first, dry hands, one hand only.
- 5
Sewer backup: stop using every drain
No flushing, no laundry, no dishwasher. Everything you send down joins the backup. If more than one drain is backing up at once, the blockage is in the main line, which is a sewer-line job, not a plunger job.
- 6
Decide whose side of the curb the problem is on
No water at all in the house, or a wet patch or bubbling in the front lawn or street, points to the water main or the service line at the curb stop. That is the township, below. Water pouring inside the house is the house side. That is a plumber, above.
When it is the township's problem, not yours
The water main under the street and the service line up to the curb stop belong to the township. A break there shows up as no water at all, low pressure across the whole house, or water surfacing in the lawn, sidewalk or road. The Macomb Township Department of Public Works handles those, day or night, from 51650 Card Road, Macomb, MI 48042.
- Emergency, any hour: 586-598-1790
- Office (Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.): 586-598-0687
Outside Macomb Township, call your own city or township water department. Everything from the curb stop into the house is the homeowner's, and that is the list above.
How were these grades decided?
- Emergency capability first: Overnight crews, excavation equipment on the truck, and whether dispatch is structured for 2 a.m. or for next-Tuesday appointments. A company can be excellent and still grade lower here because it is built for scheduled work.
- Rating and volume together: A 4.9 from 55 reviews is weaker evidence than a 4.8 from 1,250. Volume and consistency were weighed against the raw score, not behind it.
- Licence checked separately: Grades come from reputation and fit; the licence check is independent. Where the state has a different filed name or city, the card says so instead of hiding it.
- Nobody paid: No company on this page paid to be here, to rank higher, or to have a competitor removed. Nobody was offered that.
Grades convert to stars on a 5-point scale: A+ = 5.0, A = 4.7, A- = 4.3, B+ = 4.0, B = 3.7, C+ = 3.0, C = 2.7, C- = 2.3.
What this page cannot tell you
- Whether anyone will actually answer at 2 a.m. tonight. Grades describe how each company is set up, not who is on shift.
- Whether the Google ratings are accurate. They are printed as supplied and this site has not audited them.
- Whether any company is insured. A licence is not insurance. Ask for the certificate from the insurer.
- What the after-hours rate is. No pricing is published by the state and none is invented here. Ask before the truck rolls.
- Whether a licence has changed since July 17, 2026, the date of the state export used.
How do I check a licence before they arrive?
Take the number off the card, follow the steps on how to check a Michigan plumbing licence, and confirm the business name, the class and the expiry all match. If the crew at your door will not give you a licence number, that is your answer.
